The Savannah River Ecology Lab (SREL) is looking to hire one temporary research technician for 8 months to assist with laboratory research being conducted at the Savannah River Site, Aiken, SC. The technician will primarily work on projects focused on primarily on mosquito ecology. As a part of this study the technician will work in close collaboration with other students, postdocs, faculty and agency personnel to help investigate the ecological and evolutionary factors affecting mosquito vectorial capacity. The technician will also be involved in experiments focusing on the trophic transfer of contaminants (e.g., copper) and the effects of contaminant exposure on vectorial capacity. The successful candidate will also help in maintaining several ongoing experiments with invertebrates including mosquito evolution under specific selection pressures (e.g., parasite infection). Other duties include data entry/organization and general lab work while at SREL. Employment will begin as early as mid-February 2021 and will continue for 4 months with a possibility to extend for an additional 4 months. There may also be opportunities for the technician to transition to a MS position in Fall 2021 (see details below).

Minimum qualifications for this position include a B.S. degree in evolutionary biology, ecology, entomology or a related discipline. Please note that there may be a possibility for the technician to transition to a MS position at the lab in Fall 2021. Thus, preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate exceptional lab skills (specifically related to entomology and/or genetics), good academic performance (as evidenced by GPA and GRE scores), as well as evidence of any publications and/or conference presentations. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, responsible, and enthusiastic individual who is eager to learn new skills. Technician will need to be organized, responsible, detail orientated, and comfortable working alone. Must be able to work in all weather conditions including hot, humid, and rainy weather. Must be able to tolerate biting insects, working at a lab bench for 6+ hours, and be capable of moderate hiking up to 6+ miles a day over uneven terrain. Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. Must have a valid US driver’s license. SREL is located on the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina. A security clearance will be required.
