Description
Researcher IV, Gainesville, FL SUMMARY The Researcher IV shall conduct molecular and genetic analyses of invasive and imperiled species. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Laboratory Tasks Conducts research and technical duties in a laboratory environment. Required ability to filter water, extract, purify, and quantify DNA and RNA, ability to conduct polymerase chain reaction and quantitative polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis, design primers and troubleshoot molecular biology protocols. Operation and maintenance of specialized laboratory equipment is preferred including, but not limited to, mechanical pipettors, thermocyclers, spectrophotometers, DNA sequence analyzers, centrifuges. Collect, prepare, evaluate, and verify samples and supporting records; maintain records and locate and compile data and other information from various sources; keep detailed records of experimental data in laboratory notebook and digital formats; tabulate, statistically analyze, and summarize data using computers and software packages; maintain inventory of chemicals, and prepare solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory. Provide technical support in preparation of outreach materials (e.g., PowerPoint presentations, posters, hand-outs), and may be asked to present research at scientific meetings. Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, including alerting laboratory manager when supplies need to be ordered and doing research to determine the appropriate supplies for the task. Field Tasks Assist with acquiring biological samples and environmental data in the field. Field work will include multi-day field trips out of town, often in adverse temperature and conditions. Prepare for field excursions by gathering and checking readiness of field equipment and supplies, making datasheets, calibrating instruments, packing truck, signing out trucks, etc. Office tasks Will be responsible for day-to-day oversight of identified projects. May serve a role in coordinating/training for volunteer/student activities in the lab. Perform literature reviews and synthesize information to be used in research projects. Perform standard office work as necessary to organize and maintain research efforts along with proper data storage via digital documents and databases and accompanying metadata. Other administrative tasks as needed (i.e. communication with collaborators, facilitation of meetings, assistance with workshops, etc.). Qualifications
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Masters Degree Two (2) years experience in a related field is preferred. Experience with standard genetic laboratory techniques and software is required Experience with environmental DNA methodologies and analyses, including metabarcoding, quantitative PCR, and invasive species or reptile ecology preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to successfully pass a drug screen and background investigation WORK ENVIRONMENT Travel may be required to support program tasks This position is 100% onsite at a federal facility in Gainesville, FL Cherokee Federal employees are included as covered employees in U.S. Presidential Executive Order 14042, which mandates Covid vaccines for federal contractors. Executive Order 14042 is currently blocked from enforcement pending court proceedings. Therefore, Cherokee Federal is halting the application of the mandate; however, if the injunction is lifted, Cherokee Federal will restore administration of the vaccine requirement.
