Scaled and Gambel’s Quail Research Technician Needed ASAP – New Mexico

One field technician is needed to help with a graduate research project looking at the effects of weather on nest and brood success for Scaled and Gambel’s Quail in the Chihuahuan Desert. The position is based out of Las Cruces, New Mexico and the field site is located on various parts of the White Sands Missile Range. The position is for the last 6-8 weeks of the field season and will start August 14th and go through the end of September.
The overall objectives of the project are to look at how temperature and precipitation effect nest and brood success of the two quail species. The position will include monitoring the last handful of nests and then consequent broods up to six weeks using triangulation telemetry and homing. In addition to telemetry, primary duties also include veg surveys, daily data entry, and occasional lab work.
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife, or related field, or prior field experience. Applicant should have a strong interest in avian biology, field research, be highly motivated and detail oriented, and able to work well independently and as part of team. Should be able to maintain a positive attitude, and sense of humor while working in strenuous conditions (long hours, high temperatures in the summer), and early starts (we will be in the field around sunrise), and be able to live and work in close quarters. Experience with telemetry, working independently in a field site, and navigating with a GPS is preferred but not required.
Driver’s license and satisfactory driving record, and the ability to pass a background check are required.
