- Hiring two (2) seasonal Sea Turtle Program interns. This is a seasonal position. The position will be located on St. Catherines Island (SCI). Housing, utilities, internet, and transportation to, from, and on the island are all provided. Although we are an independent program, we work closely with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GA DNR), Wildlife Resources Division, and this program is covered under DNR permit. The intern will be trained by both the SCI Sea Turtle Program Supervisor as well as the GA DNR Sea Turtle Program Coordinator. The sea turtle program intern will have one to two days off per week and must be flexible about days off. SCI is only accessible by boat. Access to the mainland is limited and is not guaranteed on the intern’s time off. There is not always guaranteed cell phone service throughout the entirety of the island. The intern must carry a radio on their person at ALL times to ensure safety. Responsibilities, qualifications, and other pertinent information are as follows: RESPONSIBILITIES AND STANDARDS: The successful applicant will work under the supervision of the St. Catherines Island Sea Turtle Program Supervisor and St. Catherines Island Director. -Locate and mark sea turtle nests, relocate threatened nests, collect nesting and hatchling data, and post-hatching excavations and inventories. -Conduct daily dawn beach surveys to assess sea turtle and beach nesting bird activity as well as possible sea turtle and marine mammal strandings. -Conducted mostly on UTVs -Maintain written records and enter data in a timely and organized fashion. -Assistance with other island wildlife and habitat management initiatives. -Ensure field equipment is properly maintained and calibrated and coordinate repairs and maintenance of equipment and facilities with the Sea Turtle Program Supervisor. -Monitor nests throughout the season for signs of depredation. -Collect genetic samples from each sea turtle nest for maternal identification. -Collect measurements and check for PIT (Passive Integrated Transponders) and flipper tags of nesting turtles during occasional night surveys. -Work may be performed at night, very early mornings (time dependent on tides, sometimes wake-up calls near 3:30 AM), during weekends and holidays, and in difficult field conditions. -Field work is often conducted in harsh conditions that may include extreme heat, wind, rain, and biting insects. Additional responsibilities: -Adhere to established DNR and St. Catherines Island rules and coordinate with SCI staff. -Maintain assigned equipment and vehicles. -Prepare new nest protection screens and materials as needed. -After the season ends, prepare and organize equipment and materials for the next season. Additional information: Housing: -Shared housing is provided on SCI. -The successful candidate will be responsible for cleaning up after themselves in all common areas (kitchen, bathroom, living room) and keeping their belongings organized. This includes food in the shared refrigerator, freezers, and pantry. -Dishes, toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and cleaning supplies are provided on the island. - QUALIFICATIONS: -B.S. in a related field (e.g. biology, environmental science, wildlife management, zoology, ecology-related program) preferred. -Knowledge of general biology and biological data collection techniques and experience with computer databases. -Minimum of one year of experience performing field work is preferred. -Proficient and experienced with scientific data collection and processing. -Positive demeanor, with demonstrated ability to solve problems in group settings and individually. -Responsible and organized with field equipment. -Self-motivated and able to work independently and with a team. -Positive attitude and honest communication with supervisor and co-workers. -Good interpersonal skills, team ethic, and cooperation. -Coastal Georgia bird identification skills are a plus. -Ability to conduct strenuous work outdoors in rough summer weather conditions of coastal Georgia, including warm humid temperatures, biting insects, and time alone or being secluded from the mainland. -Access to a personal cell phone is recommended.
