Description
Volusia County Environmental Management is seeking one (1) motivated, team oriented individual to participate in the 2023 sea turtle nesting season. Sea turtle nesting season is from May 1st to October 31st. Interested applicants are needed 30 hours a week to start in late April and work through the end of September or October. Office hours may vary but most field work will take place after sunset. The lighting associate will work under Volusia County Environmental Management’s Habitat Conservation Plan assisting the sea turtle lighting specialist. This position will involve the opportunity to gain insight into the management of a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP), government administration, beachfront lighting management, and aspects of environmental permitting and enforcement of environmental rules and regulations pertaining to the protection of threatened and endangered species and the beach environment. The preferred applicant will have basic knowledge of sea turtle biology, experience operating DSLR cameras, be organized and detail oriented, be flexible and able to multitask, and have a desire to learn. Position Duties: • Conduct nighttime lighting surveys, inspections, and disorientation investigations • Assist with environmental permitting tasks related to beachfront lighting and other coastal construction projects • Open electronic case files and track progress of lighting cases using AMANDA software • Operate and maintain field equipment including 4-wheel drive vehicles, bicycles, iPads, spectrometers, and DSLR cameras • Distribute educational materials, participate in educational programs and events, and interact positively with the public • Additional opportunities may include but are not limited to monitoring coastal wildlife and assisting with the planning of the International Coastal Cleanup This is an hourly, part-time, seasonal position. The rate is $13.00/hour, 30 hours per week. The anticipated schedule is Monday through Thursday, with occasional weekend nights. The start date is flexible. Housing and benefits are NOT provided but a vehicle for work transportation will be provided. Qualifications
All applicants must be 21 years of age or older, pass a background check, and have or be able to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license. The selected applicant must be able to handle the physical demands of the job including walking, driving, and riding a bicycle on the beach at night, working outside at night with limited light, and working outside which may include heat, inclement weather, and biting insects.
