- Tide Environmental is recruiting individuals to monitor for nesting sea turtles and shorebirds in Texas. Tide Environmental specializes in providing individuals for marine construction projects when regulations deem there is a potential impact to Endangered or Threatened Species. Individuals are being sought for shore based projects monitoring for nesting sea turtles and shorebirds in conjunction with upcoming project(s). Applicants with prior NMFS Protected/Endangered Species approval will be given preference. Applicants must have experience conducting sea turtle nest and shorebird monitoring. In association with marine construction projects monitors are needed to survey for sea turtles and shorebirds. During these daily surveys, monitors walk the beach project area and document findings. Monitors will remain onsite for a 12 hour shift. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Monitor for the presence of threatened/endangered species throughout the project area Monitor construction activities Identify false crawls and nests Identify sea turtle species from tracks Monitor the water for sea turtles Escort project vehicles to/from the work site when needed Survey for nesting shorebirds (piping plover, red knots) Complete required data forms Monitoring conditions can be strenuous, will require walking long distances in soft sand, and are conducted daily despite inclement weather. Daily temperatures will reach 90+ degrees with high humidity for a significant portion of the project. Expect hot, buggy, sandy, and wet conditions during the project duration. Monitoring of the project area will occur 24hrs/day 7-days/week, each monitor will work a 12 hr period. This is an independent contractor position, with lodging provided.
- Qualifications
- Minimum Requirements B.S. in Marine Biology or related field (specialized experience may substitute for educational experience) Documented experience conducting sea turtle nest surveys Documented shorebird monitoring experience (preferably piping plover and red knots) Training is sea turtle species identification based on tracks Must be able to work 12 hour on/off shifts for a minimum of 30 days in a row with no days off (Preference will be given to individuals willing to commit for the entire nesting season/project duration) Be in good physical shape and able to walk in soft sand for long distance, stand for hours at a time, and lift 50lbs Detailed oriented and possess good communication skills Reliable transportation and responsible for your daily travel to/from job site. Must be able to travel on short notice Work independently and objectivity Ability to work with construction crews Must be a U.S. Citizen, residing within the U.S. This is an independent contractor position (no benefits or taxes withheld).
