!TWO WEEKS LEFT TO APPLY! The Bald Head Island Conservancy on Bald Head Island (BHI), NC, is seeking undergraduate juniors, seniors, or recent college graduates with fieldwork experience to join our nonprofit team dedicated to the conservation, education, and preservation of barrier islands. Duties consist primarily of conducting beach patrols via Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTV) or on foot to encounter and protect nesting sea turtles & their nests, as well as supporting scientific research, but will also include environmental education and other responsibilities essential to the function of a nonprofit organization. The Conservancy’s Sea Turtle Protection Program was established in 1983 in cooperation with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the National Marine Fisheries Service. BHI is primarily a nesting beach for loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green (Chelonia mydas) sea turtles. This is a highly competitive position that is mentally and physically challenging, as interns will be working through inclement weather and buggy conditions. Position Responsibilities -Conduct a mixture of dawn & night patrols from May to early November -Apply flipper tags & Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags to nesting sea turtles -Assist in the collection & management of biological samples & biometric data -Relocate imperiled nests & excavate nests to determine their success -Maintain field equipment & vehicles -Conduct a short project to enhance our research mission -Educate the public about sea turtle ecology & beach etiquette during nesting -Assist in sea turtle stranding response, including participation in necropsies -Assist with various duties associated with non-profit business management The internship term is Tuesday, May 16 through Friday, August 15, 2022. Sea turtle interns work a nocturnal schedule from 9 pm - 7 am with 4 nights on 1 night off, conducting beach patrols via Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTV) or on foot to encounter and protect nesting sea turtles & their nests, as well as supporting scientific research. The average workweek is 50 - 60 hrs, with 1 day off per week. Weekend/Holiday work is required. Interns live in provided on-campus housing. Qualifications
-Rising juniors, seniors, or recent graduates from an accredited college or university -Background and/or degree in Ecology, Biology, Marine Science, Env.
