Description
SEATRU is looking for hardworking and self-motivated individuals to help lead our long-term sea turtle conservation project at the Chagar Hutang Turtle Sanctuary, on Redang Island, Malaysia. Chagar Hutang is a picturesque location in Southeast Asia, with clear turquoise waters, pristine coral reefs, a long sandy crescent beach, and lots of nesting green turtles. For the last 30 years, SEATRU has worked to conserve and protect nesting sea turtles and their vulnerable nests, and as a Research Coordinator, you will be an essential part of our long-term conservation efforts. You will help train and supervise volunteers in all aspects of SEATRU’s research, conservation, and educational outreach activities at Chagar Hutang Research Coordinators will also contribute to ongoing research projects including:(1) sea turtle photo ID, and (2) epibionts (i.e. barnacles and other parasitic growth), (3) educational outreach activities. Shared accommodations (separate male and female dormitories), and self-catered daily group-cooked meals are provided for interns at the Chagar Hutang Research Station. Internship duration: minimum 3 months with flexible dates for international travelers Responsibilities including: • Lead nightly beach patrols for nesting Green and Hawksbill turtles. • Conduct morning nest checks for sea turtle hatchlings. • The collection and management of all sea turtle nesting data. • Weekly updates between our research station and SEATRU office • Welcoming volunteers, including station briefings and sleeping arrangements • Scheduling volunteer activities like snorkeling, water-sports, and jungle trekking • Conduct educational briefings for visiting day trip tourists • Helping maintain the overall organization and cleanliness of the research station.
Qualifications
Required qualifications: • Current undergraduate or related field experience working outdoors. • Passion for marine conservation and awareness • Ability and desire to work long, irregular hours (including on-call availability and weekend hours) • Ability to work under adverse conditions (intense sun and heat, biting insects, rain) • Ability to multitask and exercise time efficiently. • Ability to maintain a positive attitude & sense of humor. • Data entry/management experience Desired Qualifications: • Able to write and communicate in English or Bahasa Malay • Previous experience conducting sea turtle nesting surveys • Previous experience excavating sea turtle egg chambers and analysis hatching success • Experience with public outreach (public speaking and answering tourist questions) To apply, please email a cover letter, resume/CV, and contact information for three references to turtle@umt.edu.my.
