The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is accepting applications to fill two seasonal technician positions for a research project assessing Seaside Sparrow abundance, distribution, annual survivorship, and nesting productivity in southwest Louisiana. These positions will be based at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge (5476 Grand Chenier Hwy, Grand Chenier, LA), which is located along the coast in Cameron and Vermilion parishes.
Technicians will be supervised by a LDWF biologist and assist with field data collection, data entry, and equipment maintenance, as needed. Job duties will include regular mist-netting, banding assistance, vegetation sampling, nest searching and monitoring, deploying cameras at nests, tracking birds equipped with radio transmitters, resighting color-banded birds, and daily data entry/proofing.
Applicants with previous field research experience that includes handling and extracting birds from mist nets, nest searching and monitoring of passerine species, and the ability to learn and identify coastal marsh plant species are preferred. Additionally, qualified candidates will be able to work cooperatively as part of a small team as well as have the ability to work independently in a harsh environment which includes extreme heat and humidity, wet and muddy conditions, biting insects, and alligators. Successful applicants are required to have a valid driver’s license, boater safety certification, and have the ability to trailer and operate ATVs and boats. A drug screening test is a pre-employment requirement as well.
