Description
Seeking to fill two positions for seasonal avian field technicians: Opportunity to contribute to a long-term survey and monitoring project of the endangered black-capped vireo in the Wichita Mountains in southwestern Oklahoma--conducted since 1988. Individuals are expected to survey for and map vireo territories, monitor reproductive success for a subset of territories, (option to) capture and band vireos. Will also be contributing to data collection for telemetry study about BCVI movement and behavior. Specific instruction and training provided. Individuals need to record and transcribe data accurately, maintain field notes, be able to traverse rocky terrain, and maintain a positive attitude during weather extremes. The Wichita Mountains is a unique ecosystem in the southern plains that hosts the largest viable population of black-capped vireos in Oklahoma. Other highlights of this rugged and beautiful landscape include a high diversity of birds and wildflowers along with large mammals like elk and bison.  Approximate 3 month. Anticipated start date early May 2018. Housing and transportation (or transportation expenses) on-site are also provided.
Qualifications
Applicants for field technicians should have: solid field skills in bird identification by sight and sound; nest-finding experience; capacity to use GPS units and download to computer software; data-management skills; ability to manage data entry and organization, and interpretation of observations; ability to traverse rocky terrain, and be comfortable working independently. Specific instruction and training provided. Previous experience working with Black-capped Vireos useful but not required. Apply to Paula Cimprich at paula.m.cimprich-1@ou.edu.
