Description The Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution. To carry out this mission, the Department exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife species, plants, and natural communities, as well as the habitats that support them. The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries serves Massachusetts’ citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats, while providing sustainable fisheries related recreational and commercial opportunities. The Seasonal Fisheries Technician allows the Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) to monitor and manage recreational fish species throughout the waters of the Commonwealth. DMF conducts annual fisheries surveys and monitoring, tagging, research, and outreach activities related to recreational fisheries from May through October. The Seasonal Fisheries Technician supports the Division of Marine Fisheries needs to gather catch and harvest data from the recreational fishery. A cover letter and resume must be submitted as part of the application process and attached “as relevant” to the requisition. Duties include: 1. Collects biological, demographic, economic, and fisheries data in coastal waters and on shore, including work on small craft in bays and estuaries, research vessels and "for hire" recreational vessels. 2. Records data on appropriate forms and self audits data before submission. 3. Records and organizes data including computer coding and data entry for computer analysis. 4. Operates and maintains field equipment including motor vehicles, small craft and trailers; and sampling gear. 5. Assists with other Division of Marine Fisheries' projects and conducts research when time permits. Qualifications required at hire: Applicants should have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time technical experience in marine biology or fisheries work, of which one year of the required experience may consist of the substitution below. Two years of study in marine, fisheries or wildlife biology; fisheries or wildlife management; marine science or oceanography may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience. Ability to identify marine fish and invertebrates common in Massachusetts' coastal waters. Experience working on fishing vessels and small craft with common sampling tools. Knowledge of computer software applications including: Microsoft Office Suite. Experience filling data forms in the field and compiling data in tabular and graphical form. Ability to interact favorably with the angling public, boat crews and captains. Ability to work a flexible schedule including some weekends,, to accommodate sea sampling trips. Ability to handle heavy specimens (up to 40 lbs) and work in wet and/or cold environments. This is a seasonal position, no benefits included - except earned sick leave. The start date for the position is May 7, 2023 through October 21, 2023 ~ 24 weeks. Qualifications - External See job description for requirements.
