The position involves surveying for nesting birds and raptors on both transportation structures (bridges and culverts) and in natural settings (riparian areas and upland grasslands). Removal of nest material on structures using hand tools will be required. Work takes place in and near the Denver Metro area, often in an urban setting.
Essential Responsibilities - The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to those stated below:
• Drive company truck to multiple current/active or future construction sites throughout the day.
• Work will generally occur during daylight hours and during the week, but may include dawn/dusk hours and weekend work.
• Determine presence or absence of migratory bird nests and identify species when possible.
• Determine status of completed nests (active or inactive) using a variety of photo equipment or extended mirrors.
• Take appropriate action to remove inactive or partial nests where applicable, so construction schedules are not delayed.
• Record site visit details using mobile data collection methods (e.g., smart phone data entry).
• Conduct independent field work in a safe and responsible manner.
• Additional biological surveys may be required, such as burrowing owl, prairie dog, or raptor nest surveys and noxious weed inventories.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field, or at least 2 years completed in one of these programs, with ongoing enrollment and good academic standing.
• Strong avian identification skills, or willingness and ability to learn.
• Able to work manually with an extension pole overhead throughout the day to remove mud nests (approximately 20 pounds overhead).
• Ability to work independently and as a team member.
• Effective communication skills (verbal and written).
• Strong navigation and spatial orientation skills – using a hardcopy map and electronic devices.
• Candidates should have the capacity and be willing to work outdoors in all seasons through various kinds of weather.
