Primary responsibility to conduct surveys for spotted owls as required by Green Diamond’s Habitat Conservation Plan and timber harvest planning. May assist with other wildlife surveys as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (other duties may be assigned)
•Conducts spotted owl and barred owl surveys using electronic calls and visual searches. Will conduct survey work alone, at night, with radio contact.
•Determines nesting status at spotted owl sites.
•Utilizes compass, maps, aerial photographs and record spatial information
•Enters field data accurately and efficiently on forms and in computer databases.
•Assists in a variety of other wildlife surveys as needed.
•Participates actively in company safety program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
•General knowledge of terrestrial vertebrates.
•Current valid driver’s license.
•Experience driving 4-wheel drive pickups and all-terrain vehicles is desired.
•Experience using GIS and GPS preferred.
•Education or experience with forest management techniques is desired though not required.
•Familiarity with a variety of vertebrate survey techniques is desired.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
•Works primarily (90%+) of the time in the field under varying topography and climatic extremes.
•Ability to orient, climb, and traverse steep rugged, densely vegetated terrain on a consistent basis in in sometimes harsh weather conditions for long periods of time.
•Must have ability to work independently during the day or night and without immediate supervision in remote areas.
•Works in conditions that may expose employee wildlife encounters, poison oak and/or insect bites.
•Mandatory travel to remote company locations.
•Must maintain punctual and regular attendance and present appropriate professional appearance at all times.
•Requires the use of standard safety equipment in regulation with GDRCo.
•Ability to load and unload ATV into a pickup truck.
