Description
Job Description: The Technician will conduct call-back surveys for secretive marsh birds during the breeding season (mid-April-mid-July) to explore abundance and distribution of these avian species at various wetland sites at the Fort Dix and Lakehurst sections of JBMDL. Survey points will be visited mostly by car, but also potentially by boat/kayak or on foot, during both early morning and nocturnal hours under various conditions. Work will involve accessing marsh sites to collect data, entry of field data in worksheets, and data management and proofing as needed. All field work conducted at NJ Audubon adheres to NJA’s Field Work Protocol following COVID-19 precautions, complying with federal, state, and local guidelines and restrictions, and following industry best practices. Health and safety of staff, volunteers, program and project participants and the public are the top priority. Major Responsibilities • Identify access to marsh points based on their GPS coordinates by car, foot, or by boat • Conduct broadcast surveys for secretive rails, bitterns, gallinules, and grebes during daytime and nighttime • Record detailed observations and data in the field • Maintain equipment as needed • Enter field data in Excel, perform data quality control and assurance and data management as needed Start Date: April 27, 2023 End Date: July 14, 2023 Salary: $1,130 -1200 bi-weekly; mileage reimbursement provided Housing: Housing reimbursement provided Application Deadline: February 17, 2023. Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, environmental science or similar field preferred. • Experience with playback surveys of secretive marsh birds. • Experience conducting surveys under various conditions, required; previous experience and ability to work in wetland habitats preferred. • Willingness to work during nighttime hours under sometimes difficult field conditions. • Willingness to work in restricted areas and follow DoD safety protocols required. • Attention to detail, ability to follow detailed data collection protocols. • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with co-workers and partners. • Proficiency with GPS and range finders preferred. • Proficiency with MS Office, including Excel or Access, required. • Excellent oral and written skills required. • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive feedback. • Motivated self-starter with capacity to work independently or in a team setting with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude. • Punctual with excellent organizational, time and project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines. • Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality. • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet the special needs of the program and organization. • Ability to walk in uneven, muddy, or wet terrain, sometimes in inclement weather. • Ability to move materials and lift 25 lbs. as needed. • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.
