Preferred Start Date: Mid-June Expected End Date: End of August/Beginning of September Start and end dates may be flexible for the right candidate. Spend the summer in the forests of the northern Sierra while honing forestry skills in the Lassen National Forest. The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment is looking for a highly motivated individual to fill the position of Sierra Field Crew Leader. The selected applicant will lead and supervise a five-member crew to mark trees for management of vegetation on the Lassen National Forest in California. Crew leader will be expected to camp in the field while working four, ten hour days, Monday-Thursday. Position is open until filled, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received. Job Duties Tree Designation: Crew leader will be responsible for designating harvest/leave trees following provided marking guidelines, while providing oversight for five crew members. Ability to motivate and supervise a crew a must. Crew leader will be expected to exercise sound judgement in designating trees. Crew leader will be provided a paid two-week training program, must be organized, open to learning, and willing to work hard in a physically demanding position.
Qualifications Required • Experience with crew leadership; excellent ability to work with and lead a group; • Experience with field forestry techniques and/or commensurate education in forestry or related subject area; • Familiarity with mixed conifer forests, including ability to identify common tree species; • Proficiency using a map and compass to navigate; • An ability to bring critical thinking skills, creativity, and laughter to the work place; • A willingness to work and live in a mountainous area, including camping for up to one week at a time; • Willingness to work hard; • Punctual and diligent in their work; • Good physical conditioning to work and walk in the forest all day; • Familiarity with best practices in field safety and Leave No Trace principles; • Wilderness First Responder certified; • Possess a valid, clean, state-issued driver’s license, with an ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle; • A strong desire to engage in forest management; • Sense of humor. Compensation Crew leader will receive approximately $18 to 22/hour (depending on experience), an additional field per diem, as well as paid holidays and sick time.
