POSITION DESCRIPTION The Nulhegan Basin Pro Crew will be engaging in conservation projects at the Nulhegan Basin Division of the Silvio O. Conte National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Vermont. Projects will include trail maintenance, boardwalk construction, and facilities maintenance. Crew members will receive specific, on-site training throughout the season. Members of this crew are also eligible for the Public Land Corps program. In this program, young adults between the ages of 16 and 30 who successfully complete 640 hours of conservation projects (120 of which on public lands) are then eligible to use, for two years, a noncompetitive hiring status for consideration when applying to competitive service positions. The Nulhegan Basin consists of over 26,600 acres of coniferous and deciduous forest as well as wetlands, shrub swamps, and three of the four tributaries of the Nulhegan River. It has been designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society due to the abundance of songbirds, particularly warblers and boreal species. DUTIES Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: -Work alongside three other crew members while completing priority conservation projects -Respond to and work with leadership team in a respectful and productive manner -Promote a safe work environment for fellow crew members and the public -Maintain a positive attitude and enthusiasm to learn more about conservation and natural resource management COMMITMENT Season Dates: May 31st through September 24th. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, 40 hours per week. COMPENSATION Pay Rate: $15-17 per hour depending on prior experience. Training Opportunities: Wilderness First Aid, trail building and maintenance skills, proper tool use, leadership development, OSHA job safety, axe use, Game of Logging chainsaw training.
QUALIFICATIONS -Previous carpentry experience preferred -Commitment to protecting and improving the quality of the environment for human and natural communities -The ability to work responsibly and cooperatively as a member of a team -Experience in conservation, landscaping/gardening, or farm/woods work a plus -Capable of performing strenuous physical labor such as carrying 40+ pounds, including tools associated with duties (e.g. shovel, saw, etc.), over rough terrain -First Aid and CPR training a plus -Candidates must be at least 18 years old by May 1, 2021 HOW TO APPLY Please fill out an online application here: If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call (802) 723-6551 x304.
