Description
Research technicians (up to 6) needed ASAP for a project studying the endangered New Mexico jumping mouse. The field season is expected to run from early June into October. Successful applicants will work as part of a team to determine success of translocation for the New Mexico jumping mouse. We will trap small mammals with Sherman traps, radio track, and measure environmental variables. The research takes place in remote riparian areas located within the mountains of Arizona. Technicians will be camping while in the field for approximately 6-9 days at a time. Office duties could include data entry, maintenance of field gear, and travel preparations. Qualifications
To be considered for these positions, you MUST have extensive camping experience, preferably at high elevations (>7000 feet), be able to navigate across difficult trail-less terrain, be comfortable conducting VHF telemetry throughout the night, be comfortable working and camping in remote areas, be able to spend several hours in waders walking through fast-moving streams, be comfortable and safe driving 4WD vehicles, and have a passion for conducting field research. Applicants should be motivated, able to work well with others or work independently (at night while radio tracking), be able to hike with heavy equipment in rough terrain and maintain a positive attitude under adverse weather conditions. The ideal candidate will have trapping and handling experience with small mammals, radio telemetry experience, familiarity with fauna and flora of the southwest region, and the ability to navigate to sampling locations using a map, compass, or GPS unit.
