This seasonal soil technician will work with an experienced crew lead, assisting in rangeland inventory surveys on public and private lands.Field work takes up about 85% of the position responsibilities. Duties will also include assisting in the collection of rangeland data. A basic understanding of rangeland monitoring techniques is required. Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Schedule 1. Data Collection  a. Describing soil properties and features  b. Describing soil sites, including determining landscape, landforms and landform positions  c. Describing soil profiles, including detailed horizonation and the recording of related soil properties and features  d. Understanding surface and subsurface hydrology as it relates to soil formation  e. Must be able squat/kneel for extended periods of time for data collection 2. Hiking and Camping  a. 8-9 nights of camping at a time  b. Applicant will need to use personal camping supplies 3. Schedule  a. Positions will start the beginning of May 2018 and continue through end of August/September 2018 (with a possibility to extend later into the season)  b. A field schedule of 10-days on/4-days off  c. Work day: 8-12 hrs per day during the 10 days period in the field  d. Crews will return to a predetermined base on day 10 of field stint
Required Experience 1. Experience and/or education in the field application of soil science, preferably in western states 2. Excavating hand dug pits 3. Operating Vehicles: 4WD and small trailer 4. Ability to navigate to pre-determined field locations using a Garmin or Trimble GPS unit 5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs 6. Experience with ArcGIS, vegetation monitoring, AIM Protocols and DIMA desired but not required
