Working collaboratively with Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting an intern to assist Lake Mead’s Song Dog Native Plant Nursery in propagating over 50,000 plants. The Song Dog Native Plant Nursery propagates plants from local native seed for NPS restoration projects as well as for other federal, state, county, and city agencies/organizations.
Work at the nursery includes working closely with the NPS nursery manager, NPS nursery technician, NPS volunteers, and 5-10 person youth conservation crews on nursery propagation projects. Ability to work as a team is required. Work can be repetitive and monotonous. Applicant must be able to follow detailed directions. Tasks at the nursery include, but are not limited to: soil mixing, transplanting, seed cleaning, seed collection, watering plants, weeding, pruning, culling pots, moving plants from greenhouses to outdoor compound, seeding, seed treatment, plant inventory, irrigation setup, irrigation checks and minor irrigation repair, cleaning pots, pest control including control of rodents, aphids, gnats, and other plant pests. Intern may also assist with some planting projects. Other work in the field may include scouting out plant populations for seed collection.
Approximately 1 week will be spent assisting with a fence survey project. 2 interns will be hiking along 40 miles of fence to check for breaches. The fence is in a remote area of Lake Mead National Recreation Area and requires hiking over uneven terrain, which is steep in some locations. GPS and/or iphones will be used to document areas needing fence repair.

• Intern will work with 5 to 10 member youth service groups and/or volunteers on nursery propagation projects;
• Must be able to operate a 4-wheel-drive vehicle and pass a federal background check.
Secondary responsibilities: additional tasks and duties that are preferential but secondary
• Assisting with 1-2 week fence survey project;
• Additional duties may include checking backcountry traffic counters, checking weather stations, picking-up trash, rare plant plot monitoring, restoring off-road tracks, repair backcountry barriers, installing backcountry signs, watering plantings, installing plants, and other tasks associated with Mojave Desert restoration.
? Participate in trainings provided by Lake Mead NRA staff and community partners;
? Meet with Host Site Supervisor on a regular basis;
? Participate in community service days organized by NCC Program; and
? Participate in regular AmeriCorps team meetings.
Lake Mead National Recreation area is located in the Mojave Desert so the intern will be required to wear appropriate attire to work in an outdoor setting in extreme weather conditions and very little shade. Outside temperatures can range from below 32°F in the winter to over 120° in the summer. Intern may be exposed to poisonous or noxious plants that may cause skin irritations. Intern may come in contact with spiders, lizards, scorpions, insects, snakes and other hazardous wildlife. Intern will be required to wear all necessary safety equipment to perform duties. Work may occur in remote areas on uneven terrain and various elevation gains. Intern may be exposed to direct sun, wind, dust, and rain and other environmental conditions.

Compensation and Benefits:
This is an AmeriCorps position, and candidates will receive a living stipend of $9,360 for the season. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid to members every other week throughout the service term. Upon completion of AmeriCorps service, members shall receive an additional education award in the amount of $2,887.50 that can be used for paying off qualified student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college.

• Possess clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license; and
• Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime, or equivalent of two full-time terms of service), and (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.
