- Alaska Fellows Program position description Southeast Conference Southeast Alaska Sustainability Fellow Juneau, AK This position is part of the Alaska Fellows Program. All fellows live together, “in community,” in their respective host site. Each host site is unique and remarkable. Fellows receive housing, a $1150 monthly living stipend and a $500 relocation stipend. The fellowship includes facilitated and funded opening and closing retreats. Work Term: October 1, 2023 – April 30, 2024 Employer: Southeast Conference Contact: Dan Lesh Title: Southeast Alaska Sustainability Fellow Organization Description: Established in 1958, Southeast Conference (SEC) is the state and federally-recognized economic development district for Southeast Alaska. SEC works collaboratively with municipal, Tribal, and business leaders to advance regional economic and community development priorities. Our work has been focused on regional transportation policy and infrastructure; sustainable affordable energy for all Southeast Communities; support for our mariculture, fishing and fish processing industry; sustainable food security; and workforce development. We have a 13-member, volunteer Board of Directors and more than 200 member organizations & individuals spread through Southeast Alaska. Southeast Conference also has a number of exciting and high profile projects currently underway that have a statewide impact, including the Alaska Mariculture Cluster (see alaskamariculturecluster.org), a leadership role in statewide biomass and renewable energy development, and a long term role in supporting planning and revitalization of the Alaska Marine Highway System. Position Description: The Fellow will work with the Deputy Director and others at SEC to support the USDA’s Southeast Alaska Sustainability Strategy (SASS) initiative. SEC serves as a SASS regional strengthening partner under a cooperative agreement with USDA Rural Development. The Fellow will contribute to all aspects of SEC’s SASS work, including: i) Participate in SASS steering committee meetings, SASS “office hours” stakeholder outreach meetings, and other venues to support coordination with other SASS partners and stakeholders. ii) Interact with the five subaward recipients that are receiving a total of $2.3 million in funds routed through SEC. Fellow will help SEC track the work of the subaward recipients, process reimbursement requests and progress reports, and provide support through connections to additional SASS, SEC, or other resources. iii) Provide capacity building support to entities that show promise for future SASS funding. This aspect of SEC’s SASS work is still in development and will be conducted in collaboration with Spruce Root. iv) Contribute to storytelling and data collection efforts that document and communicate SASS’s positive impacts on the communities, people, and economies of Southeast Alaska v) Participate in Southeast Sustainable Partnership (SSP) virtual hangouts and in-person retreats to coordinate SEC efforts effectively with SSP’s network and projects. vi) Contribute to SEC’s SASS project developing mariculture processing capacity on Prince of Wales Island. vii) Other related activities supporting the above tasks. Occasional travel within Southeast Alaska is expected.
