- We are hiring spotted owl surveyors for work in the coast range of Oregon. compensation: $20-25/hr DOE, shift differential for AC searches employment type: full-time job title: Wildlife technician Spotted Owl Surveyor Bushwacker Ecological is hiring people to conduct surveys for Spotted Owls on forest lands near Reedsport, Brookings and Coos Bay Oregon. The ad will remain posted until positions are filled. Applicants must have: 1. 1 season of field experience 2. Good hearing and vision 3. Clean and valid drivers license 4. College coursework in wildlife or a related field Applicants must be: 1. Committed and able to work in a safe and efficient manner 2. Able to follow protocols strictly and collect accurate data 3. Comfortable working alone in the forest especially at night 4. Able to operate a 4 wheel drive vehicle 5. Able to navigate with a map and compass and GPS 6. Physically fit and able to hike off road in steep brushy conditions 7. Able and willing to work a flexible schedule to accommodate the weather and workload 8. Able to work independently and communicate with crew leader and landowners 9. Able to learn different owl vocalizations and learn to identify owls by their calls 10. Able to travel on occasion and camp to conduct a few more remote surveys Previous experience working with wildlife is desirable. Pay rates would range between $20-25 depending on experience. Bushwacker will provide vehicle and equipment. The expected employment period would be from early March through the mid to end of August. Work hours would be approximately 30-45 hrs/week, with a combination of night surveys (~ 4-5 nights a week) and day hikes to monitor known sites, survey areas inaccessible from roads and follow-up on owl responses. The work is physically demanding requiring some old roads to be walked at night and also daytime hiking off trail in the forest. Some weekend work may be required to meet deadlines especially in the spring when the weather can prevent us from working during the week. Work hours for owl surveys are generally approximately 4-6 PM to 2-6 AM but employees will need to be flexible.
