Description
Idaho Department of Fish and Game is looking to hire a wildlife technician to monitor bighorn sheep and assist with bighorn sheep captures in Hells Canyon and the Salmon River. Primary duties include using radio-telemetry to locate and observe bighorn sheep on the ground and from the air. The person in this position will locate and hike into mortalities, conduct investigations on site, retrieve samples for laboratory analysis, and prepare and submit samples to the lab. Depending on experience they may train other employees to conduct fieldwork, help with sample processing, and other duties. They will assist with preparing for and conducting captures and are responsible for data entry and some data management, equipment maintenance, and other project needs. This person may also assist with bighorn sheep captures statewide. Work split approximately 75% field and 25% office. Start date is flexible.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications - BS degree in Wildlife, Zoology, or other related area of study and at least one season of relevant field experience. Ability to hike in rugged terrain in remote locations, work in extreme weather conditions (heat and cold), safely drive on secondary and unimproved roads, have good vision and hearing, be willing to fly in single engine aircraft or helicopters and carefully collect observational data following set protocols using binoculars and spotting scope. Applicants should be self-motivated, safety conscious, and able to work independently after initial training. Desired qualifications - Experience with radio-telemetry, ArcGIS software, R, and/or Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Access strongly preferred. Experience and/or training in animal capture and handling, aerial telemetry or surveys, conducting field investigations and necropsies is helpful but not required.
