- Wildlands Engineering, Inc. is seeking a full-time Stewardship Technician for our Charlotte, NC office. The Stewardship Technician will work across the Stewardship Team to develop, coordinate, and implement land management activities for a variety of stream, wetland, and other restoration sites. Land management activities involve supporting the long-term ecological health of project sites through the implementation of tools and techniques which promote the successful establishment of each project’s restoration design. Work responsibilities include native plant community enhancement, invasive species management, stream stabilization, conservation easement compliance, and wildlife management. Work will additionally involve addressing infrastructure improvements and general maintenance of sites. The Stewardship Technician will primarily assist other Stewardship staff members on projects while also independently planning and implementing a variety of land management tasks. This position is responsible for helping identify land management issues on sites, collaborating with staff on issue resolutions and the timely completion of relevant tasks. The Stewardship Technician’s role will involve both hands-on work as well as the coordination and management of sub-contractors. The Stewardship Technician will also be responsible for monitoring and documenting current conditions on sites and working collaboratively across restoration project teams. Success in this role will require attention to detail, adaptability, strong communication skills, and problem solving. Key Responsibilities • Promote the long-term ecological health of project sites by supporting land management activities • Collect data to inform land management planning • Native plant community enhancement through vegetation management, planting, seeding, and promoting soil health • Invasive species management • Promote conservation easement compliance through proper boundary delineation and monitoring • Stream stabilization efforts • Erosion control • Upkeep of fences, gates, and other infrastructure associated with project sites • Deliver effective communication and coordination with team members, other staff, and sub-contractors • Effectively coordinate across project teams • Maintain equipment inventory • Document land management issues and actions • Meeting deadlines with a willingness to react positively to changes in priorities • Support additional field teams in data collection efforts on an as needed basis
- Qualifications
- • 1 year of experience related to the key responsibilities and requirements of the job • Understanding of basic invasive plant control methods • Basic understanding of ecological processes important to riparian and wetland restoration in the southeastern United States • Proficiency using equipment commonly used in land management activities including hand tools, chain saws, brush cutters, and herbicide application equipment • Proficiency using Microsoft Office • Demonstrated initiative • Strong communication skills • Ability to maintain positive outlook during sometimes challenging field work conditions • Must have valid driver’s license • Adhere to company safety policy and OSHA safety procedures Preferred Qualifications • Ability to successfully identify common native and invasive plants found in the piedmont of North Carolina • A four-year degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, geography, or other related field • Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s license • Proficiency using ArcGIS software • Strong field work experience • Experience trailering and operating a UTV • Familiarity with conservation easements • Basic understanding of impediments for native plant community establishment including competition, soil health, and species selection Physical Demands • Ability to frequently walk over rough, uneven surfaces • Ability to sustain periods of strenuous physical exertion • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds • Ability to work independently in an outdoor setting • The requirements of the job and the physical demands are performed in outdoor weather conditions with frequent exposure to wet/humid conditions and extreme heat or cold. Other adverse factors may include exposure to ticks, briars, and poison ivy. • The successful applicant must be willing and able to apply herbicides safely and effectively according to label regulations, laws, and best management practices.
