Student Research Assistant for Grassland Songbird Conservation in Brooks, Alberta, Canada
University of Manitoba
Brooks, Alberta, Canada
Last Date to Apply
The Natural Resources Institute of the University of Manitoba is seeking one or more student assistants for research on the conservation of grassland songbirds in Canada. Chestnut-collared longspurs, Baird’s sparrows, Savannah sparrows, and others will be among key focal species. The successful applicant will work on one of the world’s largest manipulative field ecology noise experiments to help us understand the effects of anthropogenic noise on grassland birds, particularly from a behavioral and/or trophic level interactions approach. The research will also contribute to knowledge that will lead to mitigating effects of oil and gas development on birds.
Housing and field vehicles will be provided. The student will be based in the city of Brooks in southern Alberta where the field research is conducted from the first week of May 2021 to the first week of August 2021.
All work will be conducted with strict adherence to COVID-related guidelines set in place by the University of Manitoba as well as provincial and federal regulations.
*Positions available pending funding.
Only Canadian applicants who are registered as students will be considered at this time.
Applicants must be prepared to demonstrate background and interest in wildlife ecology, and/or avian ecology, and/or conservation, plus field research experience or potential. Preference will be given to applicants with previous grassland nest searching experience or related fieldwork skills such as conducting nest searches, point counts, and animal handling. Applicants must be able to operate independently, be self-motivated and physically fit, with a positive attitude, and work well as part of a team.
Comfort with navigating off-road locations, especially in darkness or low light; ability to communicate and interact with a diverse group of people (e.g., landowners, agency personnel), and a valid driver’s license with a good driving record are a plus.
