- The Edward Lowe Foundation’s Summer Conservation Steward will focus their time on a combination of various stewardship related activities at Big Rock Valley (BRV), the foundation’s 2,000-acre property comprised of woodlands, wetlands, and prairies, located in Cassopolis, MI. This position is aimed at aiding in the growth of a future natural resources professional, as well as the continued stewardship of the foundation’s property. If the selected candidate has a particular interest in biological research, a portion of their time may be devoted towards an onsite research project as well. Examples of some of the stewardship activities may include wildlife surveys, prescribed fire, invasive species treatment, brush removal, erosion control, timber stand improvement, etc. This position is open to an undergraduate student, or a recent graduate, majoring in natural resource management, wildlife biology, conservation sciences or related field, that is looking to gain experience in natural resource management. Ideally the candidate would be able to start at the beginning of May and work through mid-late August. Schedule can be flexible (32-40 hours/week) and will be capped at 640 hours for the duration of employment. There may be an occasional night or weekend that would need to be worked, but the primary schedule would be during normal business hours during the work week. Onsite housing is available for the selected candidate.
- Qualifications
- This position is open to an undergraduate student, or a recent graduate, majoring in natural resource management, wildlife biology, conservation sciences or related field. While not required, experience with invasive species ID and treatment, wildlife identification, prescribed fire, chainsaws and other power tools/equipment, would be preferred. The candidate should be comfortable working in remote areas alone or part of a team. The selected candidate must pass a drug screening and background check prior to starting, along with having a valid driver’s license.
