Description
Under the supervision of the Outdoor Education Director and the Outdoor Education Coordinator, the Teaching Naturalist uses established curriculum and the California State Content Standards for instructing a variety of academic subjects and recreation activities. The major responsibilities of this position include the following but are not limited to: • Teaching up to two class blocks per day (3.5 hours each), and 1-3 evening programs per week • Facilitating 1-4 meals per week • Working 1-5 days (4-8 hours each day) each season (fall and spring) for the Recreation Program on weekends and special events • Welcoming and orienting students upon their arrival • Participating and engaging in staff meetings • Addressing discipline problems (students and/or adults) • Providing basic First Aid and CPR to students and adults • Assisting in curriculum development and implementation • Maintaining class and activity supplies • Assisting in overall program operations, including animal and garden care • Keeping up-to-date and engaged with new teaching pedagogies and practices • Complete other duties as assigned
Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree in a related field and/or related work experience • Previous working experience at another outdoor/environmental education organization, and/or instructing youth • General knowledge of all classes offered at Pathfinder Ranch, and a willingness to learn more about each class • Past experience with ropes courses, horses, farm animals, gardens, and/or nature centers are helpful • Passion for teaching and building strong mentoring relationships with students • Ability to be a beacon of positive energy in a community that lives, works, and eats together • Willingness to live and work in a remote setting • Ability to communicate effectively, and give constructive feedback to colleagues • Flexibility, self-motivation, high energy, and commitment to teamwork • Ability to work a varied shift schedule in excess of 10 hours per day • Must reside on camp property • Current Adult/Pediatric First Aid & CPR certifications (see http://www.acacamps.org/resource-library/accreditation-standards/first-aid-cpr-recognized-certifications for approved certifying organizations) • Current Lifeguard or Watercraft Guard certification is preferred (see P.A. Watercraft Guard section on http://www.acacamps.org/resource-library/accreditation-standards/aquatic-recognized-certifications for approved certifications and certifying organizations) • Must be able to safely lift and carry 30 lbs. • Ability to hike up to five miles at a time on steep and uneven terrain in a variety of weather conditions.
