Description
Integrated Statistics is looking for a part-time Telemetry Data Analyst to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC). The Telemetry Data Analyst will work with the Seal Ecology and Assessment Program within the Protected Species Branch. The mission of the Seal Program is to provide scientific information to managers and stakeholders on the role of seals as important sentinels of the marine ecosystem, support conservation efforts to maintain a healthy and optimally stable population of seals in the northeast, and provide recommendations on mitigation measures to minimize conflicts between seals and humans. As part of this program we study the abundance of stocks in the Northwest Atlantic via manned and unmanned surveys to investigate population trends and distribution, as well as behaviors of individual seals via acoustic and satellite telemetry to investigate how behavior may be influenced by ecological and anthropogenic factors. The Telemetry Data Analyst will work with others in the Seal Program to analyze pinniped telemetry data. Duties include summarizing telemetry tracks, dive behaviors, and acoustic detections from tagged individuals; fitting appropriate models to these data to evaluate movements, occurrence, or foraging behavior of tagged individuals; building species distribution models from existing telemetry and sightings data to evaluate overlap with anthropogenic activities; assisting in grant report writing; and publishing findings in peer-reviewed manuscripts.
