Teaching Assistantships include tuition wavier and stipend of $4800 a semester. For more information about the program visit https://www.nicholls.edu/biology/master-of-science-degree-program/. Admission requirements include: • A graduate faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences agree to serve as major professor (mentor agreement form in the departmental application packet) • B.S. degree in science curriculum • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 • Combined GRE (verbal + quantitative) of 300 Application procedure includes an online application and fee (http://www.nicholls.edu/apply/), and cover letter, CV, official GRE scores and academic transcripts, and departmental application package (https://www.nicholls.edu/biology/master-of-science-degree-program/) including three letters of recommendation (forms included in departmental application). Deadline for applying is October 23, 2020. Applicants should contact the graduate faculty listed below about research opportunities. After contacting the graduate faculty listed below, application materials and questions regarding the program should be sent (email is preferred) to Dr. Chris Bonvillain, Department of Biological Sciences, P.O. Box 2021, Nicholls State University, Thibodaux, LA 70310, 985-449-7116, chris.bonvillain@nicholls.edu. See Research Labs (https://www.nicholls.edu/biology/) for more information on faculty research interests. Research projects associated with the positions are listed below: Dr. Raj Boopathy (ramaraj.boopathy@nicholls.edu) (1 assistantship): Project 1: Water quality survey and monitoring for the presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the public boat launches of southeast Louisiana. Project 2: Monitoring of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the migratory birds in southeast Louisiana. Emerging Organic Contaminants (EOC) include a diverse group of thousands of chemical compounds, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), pesticides, hormones, surfactants, flame retardants, plasticizers (such as bisphenol A), industrial additives, and agents, and including transformation products. PPCPs are a diverse group of chemicals used in veterinary medicine, agriculture, human health, and cosmetics, perfumes, deodorants, washing and cleaning agents, fragrances, sunscreen, and disinfectants. Antibiotics have received attention because of growing antibiotic-resistance. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen are common in sewage effluents. Endocrine disrupting-compounds (EOCs) such as estrogens, PCBs, and chlorinated pesticides are also of concern. These compounds are widespread in the environment and present a threat to both humans and natural ecosystems. These compounds are not significantly removed in conventional wastewater treatment. Individual septic systems are major sources of EOCs because of the low level of treatment and lack of disinfection. ARB and ARGs are selectively favored in the presence of antibiotics. In the past our lab has demonstrated the presence of ARB and ARGs in the local waterways including Bayou Lafourche, sewage treatment plants, Gulf of Mexico, and local wetlands. I am looking for Masters level students to monitor the public boat launch facilities from where the recreational fishermen come in contact with the water that may have ARB and ARGs. The survey on the boat launch places has never been done and so this project will be a very novel study and will address a public health problem issue that no one pays attention so far The second project on migratory birds are important as significant number of migratory birds land on Louisiana waters, which contain ARB and ARGs and we would like to find out whether these migratory birds could be a potential vector that can spread these ARB to other parts of the world where they migrate. Dr. Allyse Ferrara (allyse.ferrara@nicholls.edu) (2 assistantships): The successful applicants will conduct laboratory and field research on an NSF funded functional genomics and husbandry project using spotted gar. Graduate researchers will be responsible for brood stock collection and care and maintenance of brood stock, embryos and juveniles in laboratory and outdoor facilities. With committee guidance, graduate-level thesis projects will be developed to improve embryo and juvenile production of spotted gar. Applicants must have field experience including trailering, towing and operating small boats. Previous experience working with fishes is highly desirable. Two competitively available graduate teaching assistant positions are offered for the Spring 2021 semester in the Master of Science in Marine and Environmental Biology program at Nicholls State University. Teaching Assistantships include a tuition waiver and stipend of $4,800 per semester (total of $9,600 per academic year). In addition to the 8 month teaching assistant stipend, four months of summer and winter salary are available for each graduate assistant.
