Baxter State Park is a 209,644 acre public trust located in north-central Maine and headquartered in Millinocket. Governor Percival Baxter made it his life’s obsession to purchase these lands and donate them to the people of the State of Maine. With this gift he left a governance structure unique to all parks, a large endowment that allows the Park to operate independently from the State general fund, and several directives that describe how to manage the Park. These include a focus on preserving the wildness of the Park while providing a safe and sustainable network of trails for recreation. The Park seeks a motivated individual to join our dedicated staff to preserve, protect and effectively help manage Maine’s largest wilderness Park. The Park’s Trail Specialist is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the activities of contracted trail crews and BSP trail volunteers. The Trail Specialist acts as a liaison to crews and volunteers by performing routine check ins that ensure the work/service being provided is up to Baxter State Park standards. This position will also help facilitate training sessions for trail crews and volunteers to provide them with information about Park policy and expectations. Candidates should be able to hike long distances under strenuous conditions and operate in inclement weather. Trail Specialist will be expected to traverse several Park trails to assess for prospective trail projects. This position requires knowledge and experience in trail design/layout/planning, erosion control techniques, general chainsaw use and footbridge construction. Key Responsibilities: -Assist the Trail Supervisor in developing and providing project opportunities for crews and volunteers -Assist in crew and volunteer trail maintenance/rehabilitation training -Correspond with partnering agencies and provide crew feedback -Provide technical support to crews and volunteers and ensure work is conducted safely -Assume a leadership role among crews and volunteers -Collect, monitor, and report on paperwork provided by crews and volunteers -Assist with maintaining chainsaws, power equipment, rigging equipment, hand tools and safety gear -Help maintain sign-out system for all equipment and tools -Represent BSP in a professional and supportive manner Skills, abilities and knowledge relevant to this position include: -Knowledge of trail layout and design -Strong organizational skills -Excellent work ethic and highly motivated personality -Excellent communication skills and ability to educate others -Interest in personal growth -Non-judgmental attitude, sensitivity to others, approachable -Must be able to work independently and be prepared to deal with difficult situations
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) seasons experience in trail construction and maintenance or similar activity involving in park maintenance.
