Description
We are seeking a motivated masters student to investigate the fate and transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The project will focus on the biogeochemistry of PFAS, including bioavailability and bioaccumulation, impacts to organismal health, exposure modeling, and risk assessment. The work will take place at the University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory in Aiken, SC. This is a joint project between the Parrott Lab (www.parrottlab.com) and Xu Lab (xiaoyuxulab.com) at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL), a remote unit of the University of Georgia located on the SRS, approximately 2.5 hrs away from UGA main campus. The successful applicant may be enrolled in UGA’s Odum School of Ecology (www.ecology.uga.edu) or the Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program (https://toxicology.uga.edu). The student would complete two semesters of coursework on UGA main campus but otherwise be based at SREL. The selected student will also be expected to publish their work as peer-reviewed manuscripts. Admission generally requires an undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Ability and interest to work in both field and laboratory settings is vital. Graduate school applicants will need a background in one or more of the following areas: chemistry, environmental sciences/engineering, marine sciences, biology, biogeochemistry, and/or natural resources. Candidates with general programming skills, strong technical writing skills, quantitative skills, communication skills, the ability to work independently, and enthusiasm for research are encouraged to apply.
