Agency: Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation/The Ohio State University Location: Chicago Metropolitan Area (Based in Dundee, IL) Job Category: Temporary Salary: $1700 per month Start Date: August 27th, 2018 Last Date to Apply: August 1st, 2018 We are seeking to fill an urban wildlife technician position to assist with research focused on mammalian carnivores (coyotes, raccoons, opossums, and skunks), as well as white-tailed deer in the Chicago Metropolitan Area. This research is continuing long-term projects investigating population dynamics, movement patterns, and disease dynamics. Study sites include the suburban matrix of the Northwest Chicago suburbs and the urban matrix within the City of Chicago. This position will last a minimum of 6 months or potentially longer based on performance and funding. The successful candidate will have earned a B.S. in wildlife biology, zoology, ecology, or a related natural resources degree. Applicants should have experience conducting radio-telemetry, live trapping, and should be willing to work long irregular hours. This position requires a rotating two week schedule of days and nights. A considerable amount of truck-based radio-telemetry is involved, requiring defensive driving skills. A preferred applicant will have a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and experience operating 4-wheel drive vehicles. The technician will work as part of a research team based at the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation in Dundee, IL. This position will be classified as a Research Assistant I through The Ohio State University. Compensation is $1700 per month before taxes and OSU’s mandatory pension plan payments. Housing and general utilities are included. Vehicles will be provided for fieldwork. Qualifications
Applicants must have a positive attitude, be able to work amicably with various personalities, and live in group quarters. Field work will require a great deal of public interactions and preference will be given to applicants with experience communicating in a diverse community setting. An ideal applicant will have previous experience in handling medium-sized carnivores, conducting radio-telemetry, and communicating with the public on issues involving urban wildlife.
