ARS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), within the Midwest Climate Hub at the National Laboratory for the Agriculture and the Environment located in Ames, Iowa. The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific in-house research agency with a mission to find solutions to agricultural problems that affect Americans every day from field to table. ARS will deliver cutting-edge, scientific tools and innovative solutions for American farmers, producers, industry, and communities to support the nourishment and well-being of all people; sustain our nation’s agroecosystems and natural resources; and ensure the economic competitiveness and excellence of our agriculture. The vision of the agency is to provide global leadership in agricultural discoveries through scientific excellence. The Midwest Climate Hub is housed in the National Laboratory for the Agriculture and the Environment in Ames, IA. The role of the hub is to help develop and deliver information and practices to help agriculture adapt to a varying and changing climate and to help encourage Climate Smart practices that mitigate GHGs and climate change. The hub works with a wide variety of federal, state and land grant partners to share information about climate and agricultural issues over a wide range of time scales. Research Project: The candidate will become a part of a rapidly growing climate hub developing and sharing information about climate issues and Midwestern agriculture. The candidate will learn from interacting directly with regional partners (federal, state and university), and will help research and discover more information about climate change issues impacting management practices across a variety of cropping systems in the Midwest. Project activities will include supporting research on climate indicators that affect Midwest agricultural production at the landscape scale, including evapotranspiration and soil temperature. Learning Objectives: The candidate will have the opportunity to learn more about Midwest agricultural systems, conduct data analysis at various spatial and temporal scales, review research, and conduct outreach for a variety of audiences. Information created will be incorporated in hub materials and shared with partners in the region. The candidate will partner with the USDA Climate Hubs and many other climate service partners in the region during this opportunity and have a chance to travel to meetings to create and share new information. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 1, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors. Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for two years, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds. Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time. Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion before January 1, 2024. Degree must have been received within three years of the appointment start date. Preferred Skills: Basic numerical analysis and data processing Understanding of Midwestern Agriculture Understanding of interactions of atmospheric and soil properties (ie heat, radiation).
