ARS Office/Laboratory and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), within the Cotton Structure and Quality Research Unit at the Southern Regional Research Center located in New Orleans, Louisiana. Research Project: Research projects will be conducted to develop improved natural fiber (cotton, hemp, etc.) quality measurements. Research will involve improving and developing methods to measure fiber length, strength, color, and fineness, including the distribution of the fiber properties. Phenotyping of natural fibers including cotton, hemp, and flax needs to be refined to enable industry development and provide opportunities for breeders to improve germplasm. Learning Objectives: The training opportunity will provide learning opportunities in standard and novel fiber measurement techniques and the development process for internationally accepted standards. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is identified. The start date is flexible with desired start date of June 2023 or sooner (other start dates can also be considered). Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds. Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time. Participant Stipend: The participant(s) will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. - Qualifications
- The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields of study (e.g., Plant and Soil Science, Crop Science, Textile Engineering). Preferred Skills: - Experience with fiber quality testing, textile processing, and natural fibers. - Fiber testing experience or skills such as experience with the High Volume Instrument (HVI), Optical Fiber Diameter Analyzer (OFDA), and/or various ASTM International standard test methods for natural fiber testing. - Ability to use statistical analysis software. - Experience in data management. - Fiber and/or textile testing laboratory management.
