Description
Seeking one technician to assist a M.S. graduate student on research on Tui Chub Siphateles bicolor spawning and rearing habitat selection at beautiful Pyramid Lake on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation. Primary Responsibilities: (1) Assist with minnow trap, hoop, larval net and gill net sampling (2) Assist with quantification of substrate, vegetation and other habitat characteristics (3) Boat trailering and operation on a large lake to meet sampling goals (DOE) (4) Assist with SCUBA diving and snorkeling surveys for quantification of fish populations and habitat metrics. (5) Assist with lab experiments on Tui Chub reproductive response to total dissolved solid concentration occurring at Pyramid Lake facilities concurrently with field operations as necessary (6) Gear maintenance daily as well as gear set-up and take down at the beginning and end of the field season Shared housing in a camper trailer and food provided during sampling at Pyramid Lake. Internet at the housing site and likely cell service dependent on provider. Applicant is expected to maintain cleanliness of common areas. Possibility to gain experience on other projects within the Fish Ecology Lab over the course of the summer. Work truck is provided for trips essential to work but applicant may want to bring a personal vehicle for time off. Technician will work a maximum of 3 weeks with a minimum of 1 week off a month with travel to and from Logan, UT between hitches provided if desired. There is a possibility for a candidate local to the Reno/Sparks area to commute to Pyramid Lake for the field season if desired. Non-local applicants to Logan, UT or Reno, NV must provide their own transportation to Logan, Utah.
Qualifications
Applicants should be comfortable working long hours and living alone in remote areas for extended periods of time, without a regular schedule, in extreme heat, in buggy conditions, and with only one other individual. Applicant must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted. Applicants are expected to have excellent communication skills and to be able to follow verbal and written instructions. Applicants should be seeking or have completed a B.S. in a scientific field, preferably biology or natural resources and be passionate about natural resources research. Applicant must also recognize that work occurs completely on the Paiute Tribe Reservation at the permission of the tribe and respect and diplomacy if encountering tribal members is a must. Experience with the sampling types mentioned and boat trailering/operation preferred.
