- Description
- One individual volunteer Visitor Services Assistant, with duties focusing on outreach and visitor engagement, is needed for a 16-18 week position beginning mid-December 2022 or January 2023 at Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge (Kodiak Refuge) in Kodiak, Alaska. Benefits include roundtrip airfare (and up to 3 checked bags) from a major US airport, housing, and expenditures (we provide food while in the field OR reimbursement pending receipts for up to $25/ day while in Kodiak) in exchange for volunteering 32-40 hours per week to support refuge activities. The refuge will also provide rapid at home COVID-19 tests related to testing for the coronavirus that may be required for fulfilling volunteer duties. This is not a paid position. A Government vehicle will be available for transportation to/from work and limited personal use while volunteering. Kodiak, AK is a beautiful and remote island community located in the Gulf of Alaska, 30 miles from the nearest mainland coast of southwestern Alaska. Kodiak Refuge was established in 1941 and provides habitat for brown bear, salmon and other wildlife, and encompasses 1.9 million-acres, covering more than 2/3rds of Kodiak Island, part of Afognak Island, and all of Ban and Uganik Islands. The Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center is located in downtown Kodiak, AK in the heart of the City of Kodiak. The Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center serves as a gateway for visitors and community members to the refuge since the refuge is not accessible by vehicle via the approximately 100 miles of road system surrounding Kodiak, AK. For more information and photos about Kodiak Refuge please visit: https://www.fws.gov/refuge/kodiak DUTIES INCLUDE: • Staff the Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center information desk, supporting facility operations and basic maintenance • Assist in the development and distribution of weekly educational kits focused on specific topics • Support visitor services staff with interpretive programs, special events, and developing outreach content for the Kodiak Refuge Facebook page • Create and lead interpretive programs for the public • Support other refuge related tasks as needed, which may include assisting with Refuge Administrative, Maintenance, or Biological program projects
- Qualifications
- REQUIREMENTS: • U.S. Citizenship • Valid drivers' license; completion of required online Defensive Driving course • Willingness to undergo a required criminal history background check • Work on weekends and some holidays • Ability to interact with a diverse public, USFWS staff and volunteers of all ages in a professional manner.
