Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies (FAU/CES) is offering a full-time position to provide scientific support for the South Florida Water Management District’s (SFWMD’s) Water Quality Monitoring Section (WQM). The position is based at the SFWMD Field Operations Center in West Palm Beach and will provide water quality monitoring quality assurance system support. Tasks include Quality Assurance Quality Control (QAQC) skills including data validation, quality system document development and review, data investigation and evaluation and processing data corrections.
Water Quality Environmental Scientist - Description
The Environmental Scientist position’s responsibilities are primarily office-based, with occasional field trips to project sites that may include exposure to hot, humid, and wet conditions in areas occupied by animals such as alligators, snakes, and stinging/biting insects. The primary tasks include:
• Field Data Validation - Validation of field test data using knowledge of field data calibration and verification procedures specified by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Quality System Document Development and Review - assist the SFWMD Quality Assurance (QA) Team, as assigned, to create and maintain various WQM quality system documents including, but not limited to SOPs, the WQM Quality Manual and the WQM Field Sampling Manual. This task requires knowledge of MS Word.
• Data Investigation and Evaluation – Assist WQM QA Team with quality assurance investigations and write assessments based on quality system requirements. This task requires knowledge of MS Excel with knowledge of Florida Department of Environmental Protection SOP requirements preferred.
• Processing Data Corrections – Assist WQM QA Team as assigned to coordinate corrections of WQM field records.
Qualifications: Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs, especially MS Word and MS Excel, have strong oral and written communication skills and proven organizational, time, and self-management skills. Experience in water quality QAQC including monitoring, data analysis, document development and review is preferred. A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a Natural or Physical Science, or related field, and at least 2 years related work experience is required.
Term: This is a full-time, benefited position with FAU requiring 40 hours per week and scheduled to start in September 2019. The salary is based upon experience, ranging from $45,000 – $49,000 annually. It is a 1-year contract position with annual renewal based on performance and SFWMD funding.
