Seeking research technician to assist with a study evaluating hatch year mallard ecology in late summer and fall. This research project will involve using multiple methods to trap hatch year mallards for implantation of abdominal transmitters. The individual will have the opportunity to gain experience interacting with private landowners and representatives from SD Game, Fish, & Parks, ND Game and Fish Department, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center, South Dakota State University, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Successful applicant will report to Brookings, SD and then will be expected to travel continually throughout August.
Desired qualifications include experience operating small watercraft (outboard motorboats, kayaks, and canoes), towing and backing trailers, and interacting respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds. Experience with waterfowl identification and capture via rocket netting, swim-in trapping, drive trapping, and night-lighting are preferred, but not required. Applicants should have a strong work ethic, attention to detail, great critical thinking skills, and the ability to maintain a positive attitude through long hours and a variety of conditions (hot temperatures, cattails, biting insects, etc.). The technician will be present during ~60 mallard surgeries and cannot be squeamish.
