Description
The Squam Lakes Association (SLA) has five full-year (42.5 weeks) and three half year (22.5 weeks) Lakes Region Conservation Corps positions open for the upcoming year, with a start date of November 1, 2019. In the winter months, members maintain the SLA's 50+ miles of trails, trek onto the ice-covered lake to monitor water quality, lead volunteer crews in the field, run engaging environmental programs and hikes, assist with developing conservation protocols and reports, and educate the public on local and regional conservation initiatives. Lakes Region Conservation Corps members are the driving force behind many of the conservation efforts of New Hampshire's Lakes Region. The program provides hands-on conservation work experience and certifications over a broad range of areas which ensure that members are capable of independently approaching a variety of tasks in the environmental conservation field. To learn more about the Lakes Region Conservation Corps, please visit: https://www.squamlakes.org/americorps Full-Year Lakes Region Conservation Corps members at the Squam Lakes Association have the opportunity to receive the following over the course of the program: • SSI Scuba diving certification • PADI Weed control diver certification • NH Commercial boating license • Plow Operator training • Ice Safety training • Wilderness First Aid & CPR certifications • Winter Water Quality training • Communications training • Lake Host training • Housing with kitchen and laundry facilities • Living allowance (subject to state and federal taxes): $200 weekly, distributed biweekly (before taxes) • AmeriCorps Education Award: $6,095 upon successful completion of program (minimum of 1700 hours) • Eligible for health insurance through the CorpsNetwork • Eligible for student loan forbearance on qualifying loans (to learn more about which loans qualify for forbearance, visit https://www.nationalservice.gov/programs/americorps/segal-americorps-education-award/using-your-segal-education-award/postponing) Half-Year Lakes Region Conservation Corps members at the Squam Lakes Association have the opportunity to receive the following over the course of the program: • Plow Operator training • Ice Safety training • Wilderness First Aid & CPR certifications • Winter Water Quality training • Communications training • Lake Host training • Housing with kitchen and laundry facilities • Living allowance (subject to state and federal taxes): $200 weekly, distributed biweekly (before taxes) • AmeriCorps Education Award: $3,047.50 upon successful completion of program (minimum of 900 hours) • Eligible for student loan forbearance on qualifying loans (to learn more about which loans qualify for forbearance, visit https://www.nationalservice.gov/programs/americorps/segal-americorps-education-award/using-your-segal-education-award/postponing)
Qualifications
Lakes Region Conservation Corps at Squam Lakes Association Candidate Qualifications: • Must be 18 years of age by November 1, 2019 • Must be a competent swimmer • Able to lift 50 pounds • Able to carry and use heavy tools while hiking • Able to hike at least 8 miles in a day • Able to work independently and with a group • Must be available from November 1, 2019 through August 25, 2020 for full-year position, or Nov. 1, 2019 through April 6, 2019 for Half-year position. • Must apply online • Must meet the Corporation for National Community Service's minimum requirements: o Must clear all required National Service Criminal History Checks o Must be a US citizen, US national, or legal permanent resident of the US o Must be high school graduates, GED recipients, or must be working toward attaining a high school diploma or GED during their term of service Apply online now at https://www.squamlakes.org/LRCC-application-2019-2020 The application deadline is September 27, 2019.
