In support of our existing and growing renewable energy client base, Shoener Environmental, Inc. is seeking a mid-level Wetland Ecologist/Biologist to join our team in Scranton, PA.
This position provides an outstanding opportunity for advancement in our growing company. The successful candidate will be a technical leader responsible for implementing quality assurance measures and mentoring staff.
The primary duties of the successful candidate will be to lead field investigations for wetland and other ecological projects located across the country, with particular focus in the northeastern and midwestern US. Field investigations may include wetland delineations, general habitat surveys, threatened and endangered species surveys, and avian/bat surveys. The position will also require the production of survey reports and other biological assessments in accordance with state and federal regulations. Participation in the preparation of proposals and assistance with project management responsibilities may also be requested, but will be a minor role.
Candidates must be comfortable working both on a team and alone, and regular interaction with internal staff (project/client managers) as well as regulatory agencies will be required. The applicant should demonstrate the ability to maintain focus in an outdoor work environment. Exposure to inclement weather conditions such as high winds, prolonged exposure to intense sunlight, intense heat, cold, or high humidity is common.
This position is a combination of field and office duties. It is anticipated to be 50% regional field work/ 50% office work. Work locations vary, ranging throughout the country. Local and extended travel (overnight for approximately one week) will be required.
A BS degree (MS is preferred) in biology, ecology, environmental science or a related field and 5+ years of professional experience in the wetland/ecological field is required. Preference may be given to candidates having advanced certifications, such as a Professional Wetland Scientist or Certified Wildlife Biologist.
Knowledge and experience with the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineations Manual and appropriate regional supplements is required. An understanding of the Clean Water Act (CWA) and Endangered Species Act (ESA) regulations is also required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy, willingness to learn new skills, and attention to detail are important. Skilled use of topographic maps, aerial photos, GPS unit, range finder, and other field equipment is required. Task or project management experience is a plus.
Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record. A company vehicle may be provided or mileage will be reimbursed for travel through the work area.
