This is a 4- to 6-month position working for Mississippi State University. Capture technicians will assist a lead technician with capturing deer for research on population responses to habitat management. Capture methods include dart rifles, suspended net projectors, and corral traps. Position duties include but are not limited to: 1) monitoring trail cameras at capture sites, 2) capturing deer from tree stands and ground blinds via above methods, and 3) interfacing with agency biologists and private landowners. Position start date is flexible between November 1-30, 2021.
Bachelor's degree or upper level status in wildlife biology, ecology, or related discipline. Applicants MUST have a valid driver's license and be qualified to drive a state-owned vehicle. Preference will be given to candidates with ungulate capture and immobilization experience, a field research background, and archery hunting experience.
Candidates must be able to take detailed field notes and follow strict capture protocols. Applicants must able to carry 50 lbs. of equipment two hundred yards over rough ground. Candidates should be prepared to work at night, on weekends, irregular hours, and live in close quarters as part of a team. Excellent work ethic and communication skills are mandatory.
