Description
The Spatial Wildlife and Ecology Lab (SWEL) at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale is seeking 7 technicians to assist in the capture of adult white-tailed deer in Southern and Central Illinois. This project is funded through the USDA and IL DNR, and the data collected will be used to analyze spatial and behavioral ecology of adult deer. The capture season will start in January 2023 and end in March 2023, with flexible start dates between January 2nd and 8th. Housing will be provided. Technicians will be responsible for capturing adult deer using clover traps and drop nets, fitting deer with GPS collars, and collecting other relevant data from captured deer. Daily responsibilities will include checking, baiting, and maintaining traps. Dart guns will be used to meet additional project requirements and goals.
Qualifications
Necessary Qualifications: Experience handling and capturing wildlife in the field Knowledge of ungulate biology and ecology Ability to work outdoors in potentially difficult conditions Ability to live and work with others for extended periods of time Degree in wildlife, ecology, natural resources, or related field Desired Qualifications: Experience capturing deer with clover traps, drop nets, and dart guns Experience administering drugs for wildlife immobilization Excellent telemetry skills Application deadline: Submit applications by October 7th, 2022; applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
