The Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute (CKWRI) Deer Research Program is seeking a (1) highly motivated individual to assist in ongoing research of wild and captive white-tailed deer in southern Texas. This position is offered as part of the Meredith Long Wildlife Internship Program. This program enables CKWRI to hire a wildlife student as a three-month paid intern.
The intern will be integrated into the field research team capturing and monitoring white-tailed deer fawns using radio telemetry and investigating cause-specific mortalities. Additionally, the intern will have the opportunity to join the team of animal care technicians at the captive facility and will be responsible for daily feeding of fawns, periodic collection of fawn morphometric data, and general care of the captive herd. They will also have the opportunity to participate in ongoing research projects at the captive facility, including evaluating how heat stress influences foraging behavior, food intake, and water consumption.
The goal of this internship is to provide a student with the foundation required to conduct wildlife research and will expose them to multiple field and captive animal research techniques.

This position will continue for three (3) months, June 1st, 2022 to August 31st, 2022. Dates are flexible.
Required Qualifications: Student must be enrolled in a wildlife program at a Texas university. The student must be able to live in close quarters with a small crew, while keeping a professional and positive attitude. The student must be willing to work long and irregular hours to meet the demands of researching the fawn rearing season. The student must be willing to work independently and in groups. The student must be able to tolerate the biting insects, venomous snakes, and high temperatures of South Texas.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working with and handling large animals is preferred. Experience with radio telemetry is also preferred.
Education - High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience - Two years of related experience.
Ability to - Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Physical Requirements - Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and hike long distances through dense vegetation.
