- 2023 Seasonal Invasive Species Technician Positions The Wild Rivers Invasive Species Coalition (WRISC) is a cooperative group consisting of several state, federal, and local partners across the counties of Florence, Forest, Marinette (WI), Dickinson, and Menominee (MI). WRISC is looking to hire several seasonal positions for the 2023 field season to conduct various invasive species activities, including education, outreach, mapping, and control work. The positions are Seasonal Invasive Species Strike Team Technician and Seasonal Watercraft Inspector. WRISC may hire multiple people for each position as funding allows. The positions will be funded by multiple grants and hired through the Dickinson Conservation District (the WRISC fiscal agent). Staff will operate out of the Dickinson Conservation District office in Kingsford, MI, but conduct work duties across the five-county area using District-owned vehicles. Duties of Watercraft Inspector Position: Work under the direction of the WRISC Coordinator and/or Project Manager. Conduct Clean Boats Clean Waters (CBCW) outreach and watercraft inspections at boat landings and operate a portable heated high-pressure washer to decontaminate watercraft. Collect required data on paper forms and integrate into WRISC computer records and online. Responsibly operate and maintain all provided equipment and materials, including the towing of the trailer-mounted boatwash unit. Participate in various water quality monitoring activities, utilizing a variety of watercraft and tools. Communicate with the WRISC Coordinator, and other WRISC Partners as needed, in regard to work activities. Assist as needed at volunteer workdays, trainings, and other outreach events. Be willing to work Wednesday through Sunday for a variety of shift hours as early as 4am to as late as 8pm. Also be available to work summer holidays. Hiring preference given to Veterans and veteran family members! Pay: $18.00/hr. *Opportunity for rate increase following mid-season review. - Qualifications: • Must be 18 years of age or older • Must have a valid state driver’s license and good driving record • Be willing to submit to random drug testing • Be able to work in a variety of outdoor terrain and weather conditions • Safely carry a 4 gallon backpack sprayer for extended periods of time and able to lift 50 pounds • Capable of operating both motorized and non-motorized watercraft • At least survival swimming skills • Ability to work on a team and independently • Outgoing personality (able to converse with members of the public and co-workers in a friendly, positive manner) • Ability to operate mechanical equipment in a safe and responsible manner • General knowledge of the threat posed by invasive species • Experience with plant identification and GPS use preferred (training provided) • GIS experience preferred but not required • Michigan or Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator Certification or ability to obtain certification by start date Work Period: May/June – August/October; 30-40 hrs/wk Start and end dates are flexible, although we would prefer employees begin in May and end in August/September, or even into October if available and as funding allows. Hours and weekly work schedules will also be variable. As these positions are almost entirely field based, with limited office data entry work, applicants should recognize that hours per week and schedules may often change last minute due to weather. Watercraft Inspector schedules will be highly variable and will include work on most if not all weekends.
