Position Description: Manage wildlife survey and habitat mapping projects throughout Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado.
HWA Wildlife Consulting (HWA) is a natural resource consulting firm based in Laramie, Wyoming that specializes in wildlife monitoring, regulatory compliance, impact assessment, and wildlife research. We have an immediate opening for a wildlife biologist/project manager.
We are seeking a team member to serve as project manager on wildlife monitoring and habitat mapping projects throughout WY (occasionally CO and MT); collecting, managing, and analyzing GIS/spatial data; and writing publication-quality technical reports. Projects will involve monitoring/mapping trends in abundance or distribution indices for threatened, endangered, or special status species, and big game species in areas potentially affected by development/human activity. Specific duties will include: design and implement species or habitat-specific field assessments of wildlife response to energy development activity; coordinate logistics, data management and analysis, and report preparation; train, schedule, and assign tasks to field crew; serve as the primary point of communication on the project among clients and agencies; ensure timely, thorough, competent completion of project tasks; and ensure regular, ongoing communication with supervisors.
This position requires frequent travel and field work. Field conditions include high elevation, rugged terrain, and highly variable weather conditions. Qualified applicants will have a background in GIS, conducting wildlife inventory and habitat assessments, and have excellent skills in oral and written communication, particularly with clients, private landowners, and agency personnel. Applicants must have a keen sense of observation, careful field data collection skills, good navigational skills, and be proficient using 4-wheel drive vehicles, ATVs, GPS units, and other mobile data collection devices. Above all, we are looking for applicants with a good sense of humor, a positive attitude, and a strong work ethic who are dedicated to accomplishing tasks as part of a team.
•M.S. degree in Wildlife, Natural Resources, Ecology, or related field; strong candidates with a B.S. degree and at least 5 years of field experience will be considered
•Aerial survey experience.
•Excellent written and oral communication skills, and experience leading and supervising field crews.
•Experience in managing databases and working with spatial data (ArcGIS).
•Ability to identify wildlife and plant species of the Intermountain West.
•Must have valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Drug screening will be required upon employment.
