Wild Sun is a non-profit organization located in Cabuya, Costa Rica. We are not only dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of of our local wildlife, but also to reintroduction of locally extinct species and other large-scale conservation projects. Preserving biodiversity and ecosystem balance are at the core of what we do.
We are looking for interns that can make a 12-week long commitment. Wildlife Biology Interns are expected to perform research and data analysis, contributing to new or ongoing projects in addition to helping care for the animals in the rescue center. Volunteers and interns work 6 days a week, 6-8 hours per day, as needs dictate. Interns begin their stay being trained to work alongside our other volunteers, assisting in the care of our animals in rehabilitation. Volunteer duties include, but are not limited to:
-Cleaning and upkeep of the center
As interns become comfortable with our system and have the swing of general volunteer tasks, we begin training and work on the internship program. Duties specific to the Wildlife Biology Internship may include, but are not limited to:
-Life history research on local wildlife
-Data input and preliminary analysis of rehabilitation data through Wild Sun Database
-Behavioural focal scans of patients in pre-release to better understand their release criteria
-Census and behavioural data collection of local howler troops
-Contacting other rescue centers to compare and share strategies
Wild Sun is a beautiful, ocean view property with a yoga deck, infinity pool, on-site rescue center and various common areas among 5 acres of land next to the Cabo Blanco National Park. The cost of a 12-week internship is $600, paid upfront to cover your lodging and program fees. You will also be asked to pay a $400 deposit to secure your spot, which will be returned to you upon successful completion of your 12 weeks. As an intern, you will live on-site in dormitory-style accommodations and have access to a shared kitchen to cook your own meals, or you may opt in to a professional meal plan for $80/week. Most dietary needs can be accommodated.
Applicants must be at least 20 years old, able to work in all weather conditions, and comfortable being on your feet for extended periods of time. Prior experience in animal husbandry is valued but not required, as all interns and volunteers go through formal training upon arrival. Experience and/or studies in field work, biology, environmental sciences, statistics, or related fields will be given preference. Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and a passion for animals are a must.
