Job Description Are you looking for in the field experience with wildlife and natural resources management? The Utah National Guard is looking for a seasonal wildlife technician to conduct surveys and monitoring on Camp Williams. Camp Williams is located approximately 15 miles south of Salt Lake City in the town of Bluffdale. The technician will work as part of the Natural Resources Management team to conduct radio telemetry on rattlesnakes and conduct other wildlife surveys and monitoring. Job Overview The primary focus of the work will be tracking radio transmittered rattlesnakes as part of a study looking at movement patterns and habitat selection. Technician should be comfortable working with venomous reptiles, experience will be preferred. The technician will also assist with a variety of wildlife surveys including several taxa (Mammals, amphibians, insects). The position is temporary (approx. April – August). Schedule is 40 hours/week, generally four 10-hour days, Tuesday through Friday. Anticipated start date is April 26, 2020. The Ideal Candidate Successful applicants will have experience conducting wildlife surveys and monitoring for a variety of taxa. Desirable applicants will also have field experience with radio telemetry. More than one-year experience will be preferred. Applicants should be comfortable using Microsoft word and excel to enter data. Applicants should also be able operate GPS and GIS, experience mapping and processing spatial data with GIS software is preferred but not required. Strong navigation skills with map and compass/GPS are important. Strong quantitative/statistical analysis skills are desired but not required. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in these areas. Applicants must be able to work independently and hike in steep, rugged terrain in hot, dry conditions, and must have a current driver’s license. The technician will use ATVs for field travel and should be comfortable driving on unmaintained dirt roads. Principal Duties - Successfully track and locate radio transmittered animals and collect spatial and other relevant data - Follow precise protocols for monitoring or conducting wildlife surveys. - Analyze, summarize and/or review data; report findings, interpret results and/or make recommendations. - Identify data and information which suggest developing patterns of problems or complaints, from which general or specific trends and patterns can be discerned, suggesting a need for further investigation. - Writes or drafts technical reports, articles or related material based on research, investigation or analysis. - Other tasks as assigned. This position pays well for a season/summer position. There will be plenty of opportunity to get into the outdoors and breathe fresh air. If time allows you receive 1 hour of paid physical fitness per 10 hour day. You will be trained to safely operate ATV and UTV machines. You will become part of a small but close-knit team striving to make a positive difference for the environment. Must be willing and able to work in a hot, dry climate and able to hike cross-country in steep, rocky, heavily vegetated sites carrying up to 20 lbs of equipment. Additionally, Camp Williams is an active military training range with special safety concerns. Must pass background check and maintain good driving record; must have current government-issued (U.S. - federal or state) picture id.
