Description
POSITION: The Arkansas Forest Resources Center, University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, is seeking to fill a Research Associate position to support the eastern wild turkey research program in the lab of Dr. Douglas Osborne. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently and as part of a research team. This position is a 12-month, one-year appointment with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and funding availability. . LOCATION: The Arkansas Forest Resources Center is headquartered at the University of Arkansas at Monticello campus in partnership with the School of Forestry & Natural Resources. The Arkansas Forest Resources Center, a University of Arkansas Center of Excellence, has the mission of developing and delivering superior programs in research and extension that enhance and ensure the sustainability of forest-based natural resources. Research is administered through the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station. . RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful applicant will work on an ongoing research effort to better understand wild turkey ecology and population dynamics in the Ozark and Ouachita mountains in northern Arkansas. The applicant will have access to 3 years of data including banding and encounter data from >300 leg-banded turkeys, >150 satellite transmitters, and 140 trail cameras to investigate survival, recruitment, and harvest rates of male turkey. Field work may consist of turkey capture, marking, and deployment of trail cameras during January-March. This project will provide opportunity for collaboration with personnel from state and federal agencies, and non-profit organizations. The successful candidate will be expected to attain lead role on data management, collaborate on analysis, and report writing. Expectations to present findings at conferences, and prepare and submit manuscripts for publication in leading research journals. . QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED: : M.S. degree in Wildlife Management, Conservation, or Ecology; or a B.S. degree in Wildlife Management, Conservation, Ecology, plus three years of related experience; experience with rocket netting, satellite telemetry studies, trail camera data, mark-recapture analysis, and harvest and band recovery data; experience with statistical modeling packages including R, SAS, and/or MARK are desired. The candidate must have good written and oral communication skills, and be able to work independently and also as a member of a research team. A track record of leadership, publications, and relevant conference presentations is desired. . SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications up to $38,000 annual. Excellent benefits. .
