- We are currently accepting applications for three 3-month Wildlife Technician positions to begin work in Washington early-to-mid April and end in late June 2023. One position will be extended until October or November 2023 dependent on experience and availability. The WSU Quantitative Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Lab is starting new research on multiple carnivore species in the Cascade Range of Washington, including coyote, badger, and the state-endangered Cascade red fox. This research is in collaboration with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and is designed to assess multiple habitat and climate-related stressors on carnivore demography, diet, movement, and interactions in front country and remote wilderness areas. Primarily duties will include: • Conduct predator food source surveys • Place and maintain remote camera traps at food sources • Identify and tag remote camera trap photos • Locate sites suitable for trapping • Map and manipulate data in GIS • Data download and entry Additional duties for the extended position: • Capture, process, GPS-collar, release, and track foxes, coyotes, & badgers • Collect carnivore scat • Conduct habitat surveys Shared field housing (a camper trailer or bunkhouse) is available, and a shared work vehicle is available for work-related activities. - Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications Working toward or possessing a B.S. degree in wildlife or a related field. Must have previous field experience. Ability to hike 6+ miles a day with a 50lb pack over rough terrain, maintain a positive attitude, and be able to communicate effectively with team members. Must be willing and able to work early mornings and weekends and drive 4x4 vehicles. Experience backpacking and orienteering. Must be proficient with computer software, including GIS, Google products, and Office products, and possess a valid driver’s license. Competent with handheld GPS, maps, and compass. Preferred Qualifications In addition to the minimum qualifications above, previous experience trapping, handling, and tracking GPS-collared wildlife. Proficient with computer software, including GIS, Google products, and Office products.
