This position will be responsible for capturing and collaring white-tailed deer for a research project at the Sandhill State Wildlife Area. Daily activities initially include trap construction and preparation, then transition to baiting, trap maintenance, and deer capture and handling. This position will involve working closely with DNR wildlife biologists and research scientists. This position is expected to last from approximately November 1 through mid-April. Field housing will be provided. 65% - Deer Capture and Collaring - Determining sites for deer capture - Prepping and maintaining sites for deer capture - Maintaining vehicles and equipment used for deer research - Capturing, handling, collaring white-tailed deer 25% - Deer Trap Construction - Refurbishing and repairing wooden box traps - Constructing new wooden box traps from build plans 10% - Other duties, as assigned
Required: - Academic training in wildlife ecology - Able to lift up to 100 lbs. and traverse rough terrain over long distances -Valid drivers license Required qualifications include demonstrated organizational, oral, and written communication skills, - Enthusiasm for outdoor work with wildlife - Willingness to work independently in remote locations - Able to work well in small teams - Detail-oriented and ability to follow study protocols and carefully record data - Willingness to work in inclement weather (including extreme cold) - Experience with power tools - Ability to follow instructions - Experience driving 4X4 vehicles Preferred: - Previous experience with animal capture, chemical immobilization of wild animals, radio-telemetry, and data entry.
