Description
The primary job duty is to conduct goshawk surveys using a standard broadcast call methodology. Simultaneously, surveyors record all other avian species detected by sight or sound, including woodpeckers, songbirds, and owls. Other work may include vegetation surveys, amphibian surveys, Common Loon surveys, Flammulated Owl surveys, and wildlife watering facility maintenance. The work schedule for goshawk surveys is Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There may also be weekend work, night work, and camping. Surveyors will need to be able to hike off-trail in brushy, sometimes steep country with biting flies and mosquitoes. The position will start in late May 2019 and go to the middle of August or later. Island Park is in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem with Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Hole, and the Jedediah Smith Wilderness in close proximity. Inexpensive government housing is available.
Qualifications
-Strong work ethic!! -Must have college coursework in the biological sciences for the GS-4 or a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences for the GS-5. -Experience with identification of birds by sight and sound is ideal, but the interest, motivation, and dedication to learn will suffice. -Must have excellent eyesight and hearing to detect birds. -Ability to use GPS, compass, and map to navigate off-trail during surveys. -Above-average fitness for hiking off-trail in brushy, steep conditions. -A valid U.S. driver's license and safe driving record. -Ability to work well with a partner in the field and live with others harmoniously in a bunkhouse. -Willingness to work in grizzly bear country (bear spray and bear-safe training will be provided, will not work solo in the field) How to Apply: Please note that all Forest Service jobs for summer 2019 will be advertised this fall, as opposed to winter or spring (as has been done in the past)!!
